Soap Making

Legend has it that the discovery of soapmaking came to the ancient Romans when the women discovered their clothes, which had been covered in ashes and animal fat from the sacrificial fires, became much cleaner when washed in the Tiber River at the bottom of Sapo Hill than in other areas. The legend concedes that the ashes, animal fat and rain water washed down wards towards where the women were doing their wash, creating soap along its journey. Whether it was the Romans or another ancient culture that first discovered Soapmaking, it is safe to say that the tradition of soapmaking has been going on for thousands of years.
