How to Make Massage Candles

Massage candles are a luxurious way to combine ambiance and self-care. Unlike regular candles, soy wax in massage candles melts at a low temperature, allowing it to be poured directly onto the skin and used as a warm, nourishing massage oil.

For best results, use a high-quality, dermatology-tested soy wax like GW415. If you plan to add fragrance or essential oils, ensure they are safe for topical use. With the gentle glow of the candle and the soothing warmth of the melted oils, a massage candle can transform any moment into a relaxing experience.

Before you start, make sure you have all the tools to make the process smooth:

  • Double boiler (or heat-safe bowl over a pot of simmering water)
  • Thermometer (to check wax temperature)
  • Spoons or spatula (for stirring)
  • 6 oz aluminum tins (or containers of choice)
  • Wicks (HTP 1212 or RRD47 recommended)
  • Bow Tie Wick bars (to hold the wick upright)

Instructions:

    1. Measure wax and oil, and place in a double boiler.

    2. Melt on low-medium heat, stirring occasionally, until wax reaches 180°F (82°C).

    3. Remove from heat.

    4. Add fragrance or essential oil and stir gently.

    5. Prepare your tins: Place a wick in the center of each tin. Use a glue dot to secure it to the bottom. Then, hold the wick upright and centered using a  bow tie wick bar.

    6. Once the wax cools to 140–160°F (60–71°C), slowly pour into the tins.

    7. Allow candles to fully set, then trim the wick to ¼ inch. For best results, wait 24 hours before lighting.

Enjoy your candle and the relaxing massage experience!

  • Skin-nourishing butters: Add a small amount of Shea, Cocoa, or Mango Butter to increase moisturizing benefits.

  • Colour: Avoid adding colour unless you want it to transfer onto the skin.

  • Essential oils: Always use oils that are skin-safe.
