Golden Brands – GW 464 Soy Container Candle Wax
A natural soy container wax known for its creamy finish, smooth tops, and excellent hot and cold scent throw. GW 464 offers strong glass adhesion and clean-burning performance, making it a popular choice for container candles.

Versagel C MP Candle Gel Wax
A crystal-clear medium-density gel wax designed for decorative gel candles and embedded designs. Its transparency beautifully showcases botanicals and suspended decorative elements while creating depth and dimension within layered candle projects.

French Lavender Fragrance Oil

ECO 4 Pre-tabbed Candle Wick

Eco Reach Liquid Candle Dye – Violet
A highly concentrated liquid candle dye designed for vibrant, even colour dispersion in candle wax. Perfect for creating soft lavender tones and custom candle shades with minimal usage required.

Instructions:

Step 1: Ensure the glass jar is clean, dry, and free from dust or residue before beginning. Sprinkle a small pinch of lavender buds into the bottom of the glass jar.

Step 2: Heat the Versagel C MP Candle Gel Wax carefully until fully liquified. Versagel C MP is typically heated to approximately 95–105°C (203–221°F), with an ideal pouring temperature between 85–95°C (185–203°F). Do not add fragrance or colour to the gel wax layer. The clear gel helps showcase the suspended lavender botanicals and decorative depth of the candle. Carefully pour the clear gel wax into the jar over the lavender buds to create the decorative base layer. If air bubbles appear, lightly pass a heat gun across the surface to help release trapped bubbles.

Step 3: Allow the gel layer to cool and fully solidify before proceeding. Once fully set, secure the ECO 4 wick directly on top of the gel layer in the centre of the jar. Use a Bow Tie Wick Bar to keep the wick centered and upright.

Step 4: Melt the Golden Brands GW 464 Soy Wax using a double boiler until the wax reaches approximately 185°F (85°C). Add the French Lavender Fragrance Oil and stir gently for approximately 2 minutes to ensure full incorporation. Add 1 drop of Violet Eco Reach Liquid Candle Dye and mix thoroughly. To check the colour, place a small drop of wax onto white paper and allow it to cool before adjusting colour if desired.

Step 5: Allow the wax to cool to approximately 135–145°F (57–63°C) before pouring. Carefully pour the fragranced soy wax layer over the fully set gel base, filling the jar to just below the neck. Allow the candle to cool and set undisturbed for several hours.

Step 6: Once fully hardened, remove the Bow Tie Wick Bar.

Step 7: Trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch (6 mm) for burning, or leave approximately 1 inch of wick above the candle if creating a decorative curl. To achieve the curled effect, gently wrap the wick around a toothpick or skewer and allow it to hold its shape before carefully removing the toothpick. If using the decorative curled wick style, be sure to trim the wick back to approximately ¼ inch (6 mm) before the first burn.

Step 8: Apply the caution label to the bottom of the container.

Allow the candle to cure for a minimum of 48 hours before burning. A cure time of approximately 1–2 weeks may further improve scent throw and overall burn performance.

Candle Making Tips & Best Practices for Hybrid Gel Candles

Hybrid gel candles combine two different candle systems, decorative gel wax and container wax, so proper testing is essential for both appearance and burn performance. Because the gel layer in this project is decorative only, the wick should remain entirely within the soy wax portion of the candle. This helps maintain safer burn performance while preserving the visual clarity of the gel layer below. Avoid placing excessive botanicals near the wick or upper wax surface where they may become exposed during burning. For best visual clarity:

  • Pour gel wax slowly
  • Avoid introducing excess air during stirring
  • Use gentle heat to remove surface bubbles if needed
  • Allow the gel layer to fully solidify before adding the soy wax layer

Temperature control is especially important in layered candle projects. Pouring soy wax excessively hot over the gel layer may soften or distort the gel beneath, while pouring too cool may affect adhesion between layers. As with all candle projects, testing is strongly recommended when changing:

  • fragrance loads
  • dye amounts
  • vessel sizes
  • wick series or sizes
  • wax types

Always perform full burn testing before larger production runs.

Candle Care & Caution

  • Trim wick to ¼ inch (6 mm) before each burn.
  • Allow the melt pool to reach the edges of the container during each burn to help prevent tunnelling.
  • Burn for no longer than 3–4 hours at a time before allowing the candle to cool completely.
  • Always place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts, children, pets, and flammable materials.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • The decorative gel layer is designed for visual effect only and does not contain the wick. Keep decorative botanicals embedded in the gel layer well below the flame zone at all times.
