Formula
- Blended Waxes - BW 924 Coconut Apricot Container Wax Blend - 106g
- Mediterranean Grove Essential Oil Blend - 7g
- Eco Reach Liquid Candle Dye - Primary Yellow
- Eco Reach Liquid Candle Dye - Orange
Instructions
- Ensure the glass jar is clean, dry, and free from dust or residue before beginning. Properly prepared containers help promote strong wax adhesion and a smooth finished appearance.
- Apply a glue dot to the base of the ECO 6 wick and firmly secure it in the centre of the jar.
- Weigh 106 g of BW-924 Coconut Apricot Wax into a heat-safe pouring pot. Melt using a double boiler until the wax reaches approximately 185°F (85°C) and is fully liquified.
- We will now create thin layers of swirled wax along the inside of the candle vessel using melted, unscented wax. Leaving the swirl layers unscented helps enhance the contrast, colour variation, and definition of the marbled effect, as the natural colour of the citrus essential oils in this blend can deepen or alter the final appearance of the tinted wax.
- Allow the melted wax to cool to approximately 145–150°F (63–65°C). Pour a small amount into the jar and add a drop of Eco Reach Orange Liquid Dye directly into the wax. Gently rotate the vessel to encourage the wax to flow and adhere to the sides of the glass, creating a soft marbled swirl effect.
- Allow the first swirl layer to cool and set undisturbed for approximately 15–20 minutes.
- Maintain the wax temperature, or reheat if necessary, to 145–150°F (63–65°C) Repeat the swirl process using a second small pour of wax tinted with a drop of Eco Reach Primary Yellow Liquid Dye, layering over the first section to build flowing colour variation and depth. Allow the second layer to cool and set for approximately 20–30 minutes.
- Once the swirl layers have fully set, heat the remaining wax to approximately 180–185°F (82–85°C). Add the Mediterranean Grove Essential Oil Blend and stir gently but thoroughly for 1–2 minutes to ensure full incorporation.
- Allow the fragranced wax to cool to approximately 160°F (71°C).
- Carefully pour the fragranced wax into the prepared vessel, filling to just below the neck of the jar where the threading on the jar begins.
- Place the Bow Tie Wick Bar or similar across the top of the vessel and centre the wick securely. Allow the candle to cool and set undisturbed for approximately 6 hours.
- Once fully set, remove the wick bar and trim the wick to ¼ inch (6 mm).
- Apply the caution label to the bottom of the jar.
- Allow the candle to sit for a minimum of 48 hours before burning, but curing for approximately 2 weeks helps maximize scent throw and overall burn performance.
Candle Care & Caution
- Trim wick to ¼ inch (6 mm) before each burn
- Allow the melt pool to reach the edges of the container during each burn to help prevent tunnelling
- To help maintain optimal burn performance and vessel temperature, burn the candle for no more than 3–4 hours at a time before allowing it to cool completely.
- Place on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts
- Keep away from children, pets, and flammable materials
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Candle Making Tips & Best Practices for Soy Candles
Understanding Temperature in Soy Candle Making
Temperature plays an important role throughout the candle-making process and can significantly affect fragrance performance, colour consistency, glass adhesion, frosting, surface finish, and overall burn quality.
Because soy waxes can vary widely between manufacturers and formulations, ideal working temperatures may differ depending on the specific wax, fragrance load, vessel, dye system, and candle design being used. Always refer to your wax manufacturer’s guidelines and perform thorough testing for best results.
Fragrance Incorporation Temperatures
We recommend heating soy wax to approximately 180-185°F (82-85°C) to ensure the wax is fully melted before incorporating fragrance oils or essential oils. Fully liquified wax helps promote more even fragrance dispersion and better binding throughout the candle.
Adding fragrance at too low of a temperature may result in:
- weaker scent throw
- uneven fragrance distribution
- poor fragrance retention
- sweating or separation in some formulations
Overheating fragranced wax, however, may contribute to fragrance degradation, especially with delicate or volatile fragrance materials.
Colour Incorporation & Decorative Techniques
Liquid and solid candle dyes generally disperse most evenly when added to fully melted wax. We recommend heating soy wax to approximately 180-185°F (82-85°C) to ensure the wax is fully melted before incorporating candle dyes, especially solid dyes. Proper mixing helps reduce spotting, streaking, or uneven colour distribution.
For decorative techniques such as:
- layered candles
- swirl designs
- marbling
- textured finishes
slightly cooler working temperatures are often preferred. As soy wax begins to cool and thicken, it can create better definition, stronger layering effects, and improved adhesion along the vessel walls.
Wax that is poured too hot may:
- blur decorative details
- reduce swirl definition
- increase colour blending
- contribute to adhesion issues or uneven cooling
Glass Adhesion & Surface Finish
Soy wax naturally expands and contracts during heating and cooling, which can sometimes lead to:
- wet spots
- pull-away from the vessel
- uneven tops
- sinkholes
- frosting
Pour temperature, cooling conditions, room temperature, and vessel preparation can all affect the finished appearance of the candle.
To help promote smoother tops and better vessel adhesion:
- Ensure containers are clean and dry before pouring
- Avoid excessive pouring temperatures
- Allow candles to cool gradually and undisturbed
- Minimize rapid temperature fluctuations during cooling
- Pre-warming containers may improve adhesion in some formulations
Understanding Frosting in Soy Wax
Frosting is a natural characteristic of soy wax caused by crystalline formation as the wax cools and cures. It may appear as white crystalline patterns or textured areas on the surface or sides of the candle.
Frosting does not affect candle safety or performance and is often considered a normal characteristic of natural soy wax candles.
While frosting cannot always be completely prevented, it may be minimized through:
- controlled pouring temperatures
- slower cooling conditions
- proper storage
- optimized fragrance and dye usage
Why Candle Curing is Important
Curing allows the wax and fragrance time to fully bind and stabilize after pouring. Proper curing can significantly improve:
- hot scent throw
- cold scent throw
- burn consistency
- melt pool formation
- overall candle performance
Soy candles generally benefit from longer cure times compared to paraffin-based candles due to the crystalline structure of soy wax.
While cure times vary depending on the formulation, many soy candles perform best after curing for approximately 2+ weeks before burning.
Always Perform Test Burns
Every candle formulation should be thoroughly tested before larger production runs.
Even small changes to:
- fragrance type or percentage
- dye concentration
- vessel size or shape
- wick series or size
- wax formulation
can significantly affect burn performance.
Test burning helps evaluate:
- flame height and stability
- melt pool development
- scent throw
- vessel temperature
- soot formation
- mushrooming
- overall safety and performance
Proper testing is one of the most important steps in developing a safe, high-performing soy candle.
