Geogard® 221 is a broad-spectrum preservative designed to protect water-based and emulsified personal care formulations against the growth of bacteria, yeast, and mould. Offering effective preservation at low usage rates, it is well suited for a wide range of rinse-off and leave-on products, including lotions, creams, shampoos, conditioners, facial cleansers, toners, gels, and liquid soaps.
Comprised of dehydroacetic acid and benzyl alcohol, Geogard® 221 is valued for its versatility, ease of use, and compatibility with many cosmetic ingredients. It is added during the cool-down phase and performs best in formulations with a final pH below 6, making pH adjustment and testing an important part of the formulation process.
Accepted for use in ECOCERT and COSMOS compliant formulations, Geogard® 221 is free from parabens and formaldehyde donors, making it a popular preservative choice for formulators developing naturally inspired personal care products. For emulsified and water-based formulations, Geogard® 221 is easily incorporated at temperatures below 45°C. For best performance, ensure the final pH of your formulation is below 7.0, as preservative efficacy decreases at higher pH levels.
Usage Rate: 0.2–1.1% (We always recommend testing all newly developed or modified formulations to verify adequate preservation.)
Formulation Recommendations
- Use between pH 2–7
- Efficacy can be compromised above a pH of 7
- Recommended to be added below 45°C
- Enhanced compatibility allows for the addition of Geogard®221 virtually anywhere in the manufacturing process
- Anionics (carbomers and certain surfactants) can cause discoloration. This can be limited by the addition of reducing agents /antioxidants, in particular BHT or sodium metabisulfite or tocopherol (not tocopheryl acetate)
- Highly soluble in polar organic solvents
Can Be Used In: Creams, lotions, body butters containing water, facial moisturizers, serums, cleansers, toners, shampoos, conditioners, body washes, liquid soaps, hair treatments, and other water-based or emulsified personal care formulations.
